Our Bedtime Routine

Our Bedtime Routine

Smooth-Bedtime.png

I'm a firm believer in simple bedtime routines. Breccan was a terrible sleeper, and we tried every complicated sleep-tracking, calm-creating trick in the book. Nothing worked until he was old enough to cry it out.Olin appears to be a better natural sleeper. We will see how things go after he has the 4-month sleep regression. He has fallen in line with the routine we established for Breccan, and we will try and keep him in line with that through the upcoming sleep regressions. Nick and I divide duties, but the routine is pretty easily done with one person.8 pm: Bath time! We bathe Olin in the sink in his Puj Flyte, then Breccan in the tub. Usually I put on calm music, more for me than the boys. I nurse Olin during Breccan's bath. Lately, we've been transitioning to both boys in the tub, but Breccan usually stays in longer.8:45 - Story time! We read the boys 3 stories. Once Olin is old enough to pick, I'll probably up it to 4 so they have 2 each. We choose to read a good amount of books because Breccan is often too busy to read during the day. I definitely have some favorite books I'm always pushing to read.9:15 -  Lights Out! I swaddle Olin and put him in the cosleeper or his bouncy chair. The swaddle is working less and less, plus it has been really hot, so sometimes I have to nurse or rock him to sleep. For Breccan, he gets a cuddle in his bed with a made up story and a song. Then I tuck him in, and he'll usually go to sleep once we leave the room.I used to loathe bedtime, but now that our routine is established, it is actually a pleasant time of day. I love the chance to slow down and cuddle with the boys while we read and close out our day. Do you have a routine that works for you? What is your favorite part?Save
