Favorite Green Smoothies

Favorite Green Smoothies

Green smoothies are such a great way to start the day. They have a hit or iron, so many fruits and veggies, and loads of vitamin C. Plus they're grab-and-go for busy morningsHere are some of our favorite recipes, including one of our own! St. Patrick's Day is around the corner, and I'm focusing on eating better after doing my "gluten challenge" for celiac testing (negative results - YAY!). I've been playing around with green smoothies. Since I've been eating like I will never get to eat gluten again, I've not necessarily been eating the best things. It's been a lot of pizza and beer and cake. I don't believe in "detoxing", but I do believe in periods without eating all that junk!  I always feel better after a green smoothie. Maybe it's that a lot of them have ginger, which is a natural anti-nauseant. Maybe it's the increase in iron from smoothies with spinach. Or maybe it's just a giant blast of vitamin C,  fruits,  and veggies. Either way, it's my go-to if I feel a bit sick and sluggish. I've been experimenting with different recipes for green smoothies and juices. Here's some of my favorites. Green smoothies are such a great way to start the day. They have a hit or iron, so many fruits and veggies, and loads of vitamin C. Plus they're grab-and-go for busy morningsHere are some of our favorite recipes, including one of our own! Green Kitchen Stories has a fantastic collection of smoothie recipes. I love that it has a bit of protein in the almond butter. Plus this whole site has to-die-for photos. It's my new cooking porn site! Oh She Glows always has great vegan options. This smoothie is my favorite for texture and flavor. The avocado makes it creamy, while the ginger and cilantro give it a crisp kick. I don't know about you, but I'm always looking for a way to use up the ends of cilantro before they go bad! Thug Kitchen is my favorite blog for a laugh. I love that the recipes are tasty but don't take themselves seriously. This smoothie is refreshing and would be great on a hot summer morning. I had some leftover ingredients so I made my own. It makes a lot - I freeze mine in Mason jars and bring them up to the fridge the night before I need them. Here's my recipe:

  • 2 bananas
  • 2 kiwis
  • 2 granny Smith apples
  • 2 c pineapple
  • 1 c spinach
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • 1 c water
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Shredded ginger to taste

If you don't have time to make your own, but you want them at home, Happy Planet's Extreme Green with Spirulina is a tasty option (though admittedly the color is not very appetizing). I've been having a glass with my tea every morning, and it gives me the same boost I usually get from a second cup of tea! Breccan is such a picky eater, and he's sometimes too distracted when we're out to eat. The ace in my pocket is the Green Protein smoothie from Jugo Juice. One smoothie has 25 g of protein, so  B and I share one. Olin recently tried it, and it's a new favorite food. He was so sad when I took it away!
