Attending To Grief: H. R. MacMillan Space Centre's Dedicate A Star Program
"When things float away you must say good bye, but when you miss them the most, just look up at the sky."
So says the mom from Ella And The Balloons In The Sky by Danny Applebee. Ever since we lost Ger in December, I've found myself saying this to myself, or saying some version of it to Breccan and Olin almost every day.
When I found out about H. R. Macmillan's "Dedicate a Star" program, I knew that dedicating a star for Ger would be a helpful step in our grieving process. It is such a unique way to pay tribute to Ger's spirit.
We chose a Star in Canis Major, and the Space Centre assigned us specifically Omicron 1. With the dedication, you receive a personalized star dedication certificate, information about the constellation, and a star map showing the star's location. Star dedication prices range from $50 to $500 with the magnitude of stars becoming stronger (brighter) with higher values. All star dedications are tax deductible.
Some losses are so deep that you don't really move on. You just have to focus on moving forward. Having that beacon in the sky can help you feel like your loved one is always with you. I know now, whenever I look at the night sky, I will see Ger's twinkling eyes right before he zoomed around our living room.
